50 CENT "CURTIS" ALBUM INFORMATION:
G-Unit honcho 50 Cent released his 3rd studio album, CURTIS, on September 11, 2007. The album suffered delays in the final stages of completion and its release date was pushed back from June 25th, to September 11th. Fellow rap artist Kanye West later re-scheduled his own albums release date from September 18, 2007, to the same date as 50 cent's album was due to drop. This put Kanye's album, Graduation, and 50 cent's Curtis head-to-head to compete for higher sales figures. 50 Cent claimed that if Graduation sold more records than Curtis, he would retire from releasing solo albums. However, 50 later dispelled his comments, but the hype around the two artists, and their albums continued to grow thansk to the statements 50 made.
"Let's raise the stakes," 50 said. "If Kanye sells more records than me on September 11, I'll no longer perform music. I'll write music and work with my other artists, but I won't put out any more solo albums."
Kanye West didnt say much about the "competition" with 50, but declined to debate the G-Unit head on BET. "What am I going to debate about?" West asked at the MTV Award nominations. "I thought this was the stupidest thing. When my album drops and 50's album drops, you're going to get a lot of good music at the same time."
50 cent, however, would not stop talking about it and had some strong words for West’s album and his label Def Jam, accusing the label of dishonest industry practices. "I bet this: When Kanye West's sales come in, he's gonna have a 70% decrease cause Def Jam is gonna buy records [the first week] to keep him closer to 50 Cent. So watch the first week and then watch the second week. Watch his ass drop off the planet." 50 declared.
Curtis features production from Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Timbaland, among others and boasts an impressive roster of guest appearances which include Akon, Justin Timberlake, Nicole Scherzinger, G-Unit, and Mary J. Blige.
The album recieved average reviews in Hip Hop circles and the music business as a whole. The failure of the first three singles ('Straight to the Bank,' 'I Get Money,' and 'Amusement Park') led to the album's delayed release and probably the shortened title, especially since 50's SoundScan prowess was now in question.
