(n) A specific era in hiphop history. There have been many discussions about the difference between the "Old School" and the New School". One accepted view was put to words in rap by Charles L. Isbell:
All of Hip Hop's time can be divided pretty easily this way:
Everything before "Run DMC" (Run DMC ) and everything before "It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back" by Public Enemy in 1988 could be considered as "Old School Hip Hop". But with regards to different Hip Hop movements such as Gangsta rap, maybe you'd have to label "Oldschool gangsta rap" as everything before 1990, including the likes of N.W.A.'s ground-breaking "Straight Outta Compton" album released in 1988, and Ice Cube's solo album "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" from 1990, for the West Coast Gangsta Movement. Everything before "3 Feet High And Rising" (De La Soul ) and "Low End Theory" (A Tribe Called Quest ) would be considered as oldschool for the Jazz/Bohemian Hip Hop Movement.
